Engine
This is a GE diesel combustion engine with a turbocharger mounted on the
left-hand side. Its primary purpose is to turn the alternator, causing the generator to produce the energy necessary to move the locomotive. Large “piping” in the middle allows fresh air to travel through, creating combustion in the engine. The piping on the top is the cooling manifold, providing water for cooling each of the passages.

Front of Locomotive
This is a GE AC locomotive. This unit has AC traction motors and is considered a road locomotive, meaning it pulls freight long distance over the road, or track, as opposed to a local delivery.
This C-45A locomotive is the main locomotive model Union Pacific uses as part of its high-horsepower fleet. EMD, SD 70 ACE and even some EMD SD70Ms also make up the over-the-road high-horsepower fleet but are the oldest locomotives. The older locomotives have more parts that need to be maintained so from a maintenance standpoint the newer models provide a big advantage in repairs.
This is a modernized locomotive, equipped with an Energy Management System (EMS). The engineer can program the route and upload a description of the train profile, allowing it to operate like cruise

Positive Train Control Screens
Positive Train Control (PTC) screens provide conductors the necessary trip information. PTC is technology designed to prevent specific types of incidents, such as train-to-train collisions or derailments caused by excessive speed. The system sends data to a back office, which shares details to the crew about speed limits or any construction on the track and takes over control if the crew becomes unresponsive.

Safety Check
Safety checks are a routine practice that occur when a group of locomotives are put together for a train. Once the air lines are connected and the valves put in position, the locomotive crew walks the entire length of locomotives to check that each set of brakes are properly working. The ability to control speed and stop is critical for the crew and for general safety.
Signals are often used to communicate with the operator. In this video, the signal captured is to communicate whether the brakes need to be set or released. Once the operator sees the signal, the brakes are set and released. This process is repeated for each section of the locomotive.

Throttle and Controls
The engineer controls on this locomotive include radio communications, the throttled dynamic brake handle, and air brake handles for further control. The PTC screens provide engine control and control of the lights, among other things.
