Service Track
Union Pacific’s Fort Worth Service Track is an area where basic servicing and inspections are performed. From general fueling of the locomotive to checking fluid and sand levels, employees ensure locomotives are ready for service.
General inspections and repairs on brake equipment also happen in this area. Additionally, electricians perform basic inspections, ensuring the controls and lights are functioning correctly so the crew can safely move across the locomotive's platforms.

Service Track: Sanding Crane
The locomotive requires sand to make sure it has proper traction to the rail when presented with slippery conditions. The sanding operation is very common within the service track. Many facilities around the network will have the ability to apply sand to locomotives.
In this particular video, the operator is maneuvering the sand gantry assembly by riding in a crane that has a sand hopper. Staff are able to navigate to different positions on the locomotive. Each locomotive may have three or four locations where checking of the sand level occurs. A hose with joint stations will be used to add sand until the box is full. That process is repeated at each location for that locomotive.

Traction Motor
The Traction Motor Assembly is an electric motor with a wheel set that sits on top of the train’s axle. It is currently on a machine to cut metal off the circumference of the wheel, removing defects, such as flat spots that could cause safety concerns. It also reprofiles the wheel’s flange. As the wheels ride on the rail, they wear and produce a thinner, higher flange. This type of maintenance helps ensure proper safety guidelines are met.
Here, a traction motor is sitting outside a locomotive, and is supported on a true machine – not all mechanical facilities can perform this service. Traditionally, the wheel turning operation happens when the wheels are on the locomotive. This featured cable assembly, equipped with hydraulic cylinders, secures
the traction motor, and allows staff to perform the maintenance operations while the Traction Assembly
sits outside the locomotive.

Service Track: Blue Signal Protection
At Union Pacific, nothing is more important than safety. To be successful, employees must communicate with each other. It’s common to do so using Blue Signal Protection. A blue light indicates when workers are on or around the equipment. Each individual locomotive has a blue flag indicating to anyone in the cab to stop, and the flag is easy to spot on the platform. Employees working on a locomotive will display a personal identification tag to alert them should any movement on the track need to be carried out.

Engine Parts
Strong Back Assembly (Left): The liner where the piston can be found in a standard combustion engine is located here. The piston travels up and down inside the cylinder, which causes the upstroke to provide compression. When there is ignition at the top of the stroke, the power cycle where the fuel combusts
forces the piston down and drives that energy to travel into the crankshaft. This strong-back and liner represent one position. A typical locomotive engine has 12 to 16 of these power assembly locations.
Head Assembly (Right): This piece of equipment is mounted on top of the Strong Back Assembly and contains the valves. It is responsible for closing off ports to force combustion into the chamber. These valves open, allowing the exhaust gas to come out, while intake valves open, allowing the fuel air mixture
to flow into the combustion chamber

Generator & Engine
Generator: There are different styles of generators, but all are located at the heart of a locomotive. The generator produces electricity, driving an electric traction motor. This causes the tractive effort and the force to move the locomotive, as well as the loads it is pulling. The diesel combustion engine turns the generators, providing electricity for the entire locomotive operation.
Engine: This is a GE diesel combustion engine with a turbocharger mounted on the left-hand side; it's a turbocharged engine. Its primary purpose is to turn the alternator, causing the generator to produce the energy necessary for the locomotive.
Union Pacific’s Fort Worth location has the physical infrastructure and staff to house these and provide the correct maintenance to change these components. Many facilities don't have a high enough roof nor the
required equipment to take the car body off the locomotive and access these components. The facility also
is equipped with a 150 - a 250-ton crane to lift the entire locomotive.

Service Track: Re-Fueling
The fueling process for a locomotive is a common operation. On average, the fuel tanks have between a 3,000 and 4,500-gallon capacity. When locomotives come into the service track area, fuel levels are
replenished. A crane is used to help operators secure the hose in place, and a bar ensures the handle is secured into the nozzle, preventing fuel spills.
Fun Fact: Union Pacific moves a ton of freight approximately 450 miles on a single gallon of diesel fuel.
